Mongolie - Ulaanbaatar

de Olivier, 22-09-2007

Mongolia (English)

We spent around 25 days in Mongolia in between Hohhot and Beijing.

As most of the travellers in Mongolia, we started our journey in Ulaanbaatar the capital city. It's definitively a strange city with Soviet architecture and customs. People are almost European in there way of living even if physically they are obviously Mongolian. It seems that alcoholism is definitively a big issue since many people are completely drunk most of the day. In the evening it creates not such a really friendly atmosphere since Mongolian people could be quite violent...

Within less than a day, we organised a 20 days trip with 2 Israelians and one French Canadian that we just met. For budgetary reason, we just took a driver and a local guide (a translator would be a more appropriated term) and we didn't include food, visits, etc. Thus, we cooked our own food and mostly camp under a camping tent.

What we didn't realise when we first scheduled our trip that the road quality was so poor. It's almost impossible for a confirmed driver to go faster than 30 kilometer an hour in average. Thus, we had to drive between 6 and 7 hours every day since when we scheduled our trip we agreed to go both to the northern and southern Mongolia. It took us 4 days of driving to reach our first destination.

Countrysides were obviously really beautiful, varied and great to look at but transportation was obviously a big issue since we couldn't even read a book because of the really chaotics roads...

During our trip in Mongolia we realized one of our Childhood dream : spending almost 20 days without taking a proper shower. We have to admit that we were really happy at the end to clean our self and to ask somebody to clean our clothes instead of doing it our self.

Because of the quality of the road and the terrible climate in winter, solidarity is something really strong in Mongolia. If somebody have a problem, we could be sure that somebody is going to stop to help him/her. Thus, at some stage, we helped a car that was blocked in the water because the water level increased dramatically. Once, we had a problem with our car, and people brought us to the closest Gers in order for us to receive assistance. Finally, we found a way to come back to Ulaanbaatar : we drove for 200 kilometers (approximately 6-7 hours by night) with 11 additional persons and 30 dead cheeps. There were only 7 seat in the car... We have to admit that the smell was absolutely terrible in the car during the whole trip...
